Interviews with people in the areas who use public transport revealed a broader vision of safety. Bedouin women refuse to use public transport at night since the bus stops are not lit. Many elderly reported that the bus stops are not accessible, and the seating is inadequate for long waits. Many spoke of the lack of shade, lack of internet access, and complained of bus drivers who simply don’t stop because the stop is so rarely used.
The students designed a bus stop to include lighting and charge points for cell phones, WIFI access and a system of green/red led lights to inform approaching drivers of waiting passengers. All are powered of solar panels discretely located on the roof.
An ingenious construction system, iForm, was used to build the entire structure including all the systems and cladding without filling the walls with cast concrete. The building can therefore be transported on a conventional truck to the site where it is filled in-situ with concrete.
